Compact 128-LED Matrix Display for Arduino Projects

The AIP1640 8x16 LED Matrix Display Module is a compact 128-LED display designed for Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, Micro:bit, and other 3.3V to 5V microcontroller projects. The module provides an 8-row by 16-column display area measuring only 72mm x 32mm (2.8-inch x 1.3-inch) that can be used to show scrolling text, numbers, symbols, status indicators, and simple graphics.

At the heart of the module is the AIP1640 LED driver IC, which simplifies display control while requiring only a two-wire communication interface. The onboard driver handles multiplexing and LED scanning, significantly reducing processor overhead.

Arduino Compatible

This module is especially popular with Arduino users due to its simple wiring requirements and wide voltage compatibility. It can be used with Arduino Uno, Nano, Mega, ESP8266, ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, and many other development platforms.

Libraries developed for TM1640-compatible displays may also work with many AIP1640-based modules depending on implementation.

Important Interface Information

Many online listings incorrectly describe this module as an I2C device. While the AIP1640 uses a two-wire serial communication method similar in appearance to I2C, it is not true I2C communication.

  • No device addressing
  • No ACK/NACK signalling
  • Uses dedicated data (DIN) and clock (SCLK) lines
  • Cannot share a standard I2C bus like conventional addressed I2C peripherals

Many boards label the signals as IIC_SDA and IIC_SCL, which can be misleading. Functionally, these pins should be considered DIN (Data Input) and SCLK (Clock).
