Constant Current LED Driver for 3-Watt Devices

The driver limits the output current to approximately 650mA for a single or multiple (up the three) LEDs in series.

Apply input power to the two white connection leads. Polarity is not essential as the board features onboard diodes in a bridge rectifier layout. The current limited power is output on the Red (Positive/Anode) lead, the White (Negative/Cathode) leads.

The LEDs can be wired in series for up to three pieces, down to a single LED (see wiring diagram). The input voltage should be approximately 2.2 volts more than the total required forward voltage of the LEDs. The 2.2v headroom allows sufficient power for the driver module to perform efficiently. For example, when using three 1-watt White LEDs, each with a forward voltage of 3.2V, the input voltage to the driver modules should be 3.2V + 3.2V + 3.2V + 2.2V = 11.8 volts minimum voltage input.

Although a lower input voltage can be applied to the driver, and LEDs will still be limited to a maximum of ~650mA, but the output current will drop off, resulting in less illumination from the LEDs.

The board is designed to take input power in DC or AC, which is unique to this design due to the full-wave bridge rectifier incorporated on the PCB design.
